What is it?

Tiny poops. Serious plant potential.

Bug Poop is pure cricket frass collected from our own UK-reared crickets. Cricket frass naturally contains organic matter and insect exoskeleton material, including chitin.

WHY BUG POOP

Made in-house from our own UK-reared crickets, then collected and packed as pure cricket frass.

Hand holding Bug Poop cricket frass fertiliser
Into the soil

Put it where roots can reach it.

Bug Poop is applied beneath the surface and watered in, so the material sits in the growing medium rather than on top of it.

Real grower feedback

Real plants. Real growers.

Six amateur growers tested Bug Poop blind. They said plants appeared healthier, said they would use Bug Poop again, and all six said they would recommend it to a friend.

The root zone

The interesting bit is underground.

Frass is placed directly into the soil around the root zone. That is also where much of the published research becomes relevant.

What the research shows

Published research gives two strong reasons cricket frass stands out: direct crop-performance results and established plant responses to chitin and chitosan.

Direct cricket-frass field trial
SE003

Cricket frass delivered the strongest vegetative growth in a field trial

What they foundAt the highest tested cricket-frass dose, green beans reached 88.1% survival, 35.5g vegetative biomass per plant and 11g pod biomass. Survival was 8.3 percentage points higher than NPK (79.8%), and vegetative biomass was significantly higher than every other treatment tested.

Why cricket frass is interesting
SE010

Cricket frass brings more than nutrients

What they foundCricket frass naturally contains chitin. Controlled plant research on chitin and its derivative chitosan shows that plants respond positively to these compounds, demonstrating the biological mechanism behind interest in frass

ContextPlant roots have specialised receptors to detect insect chitin derivatives - chitosan and chitin oligomers
